Shanique Speight

General Assembly- 29th District

Assemblywoman Shanique Speight has been serving New Jersey’s 29th Legislative District since 2018, representing her hometown of Newark. Speight holds a Master’s in Human Services from Lincoln University and began her public service journey on the Newark Public Schools Advisory Board, where she served as Vice Chair from 2007 to 2012. She also worked as an aide to State Senator Teresa Ruiz from 2009 to 2010, laying the groundwork for her political career.


In 2012, she was nominated to the Newark Municipal Council by Mayor Cory Booker, an appointment that made headlines due to a legal challenge resulting in its reversal—a pivotal moment that underscored her resilience and community roots .


Within the Assembly, Speight plays a vital role in shaping policy. She serves as Chair of the Aging and Human Services Committee, Vice-Chair of the Regulated Professions Committee, and is a member of the Health Committee. In 2024, she was also appointed Deputy Speaker, reflecting her rising influence in the Legislature .


Her background in human services and local government, combined with her leadership roles in Trenton, makes her a compassionate and effective advocate for our communities.




A lifelong Newark resident, Shanique Speight is married to Andre Speight and is the proud mother of four .
