Monica Charris Tabares
Bloomfield At-Large Council
Monica Charris Tabares is Bloomfield Township’s first Latina Councilwoman-At-Large, educator, and advocacy leader. Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, she immigrated to the U.S. at age two and is now a proud Bloomfield resident, reflecting both immigrant perseverance and community commitment.
A dedicated educator, Monica holds a B.A. in English Literature and master’s degrees in Bilingual Education and Educational Leadership from Kean University, and is currently pursuing a doctorate. She holds multiple teaching credentials—P‑3, K‑5, bilingual education, and educational leadership—underscoring her depth of expertise.
Monica serves as Director of the North Hudson Community Action Corporation’s Head Start Program, where she oversees program quality and acts as a resource for staff and families, demonstrating hands‑on leadership in early childhood education. She has earned recognition as both North Hudson County Educator of the Year and Orange School District Teacher of the Year—a testament to her excellence and dedication.
In February 2024, the Bloomfield Council unanimously appointed Monica to the At‑Large seat, making history as the first Latina to serve on the Council. She now represents diverse voices across Bloomfield, championing equitable representation and community-driven governance.
Monica lives in Bloomfield with her husband and two children. As Councilwoman-At-Large, she combines deep educational insight, community-rooted leadership, and a pioneering spirit to help guide Bloomfield forward.
