Christopher James
East Orange First Ward Council
Christopher D. James is a lifelong public servant and advocate for East Orange, serving as First Ward Councilman since 2014. Raised in nearby Newark and deeply influenced by his mother, Maxine James—who mentored under Congresswoman Donald M. Payne Sr.—his commitment to civic service was shaped from an early age.
James brings over two decades of leadership experience at all government levels. He served as Chief of Staff to Assembly Speaker Sheila Y. Oliver and Assemblyman Craig A. Stanley; was Executive Director of the NJ Democratic State Committee; and currently leads James Strategy Group and serves as Vice President of Government Affairs at RWJ Barnabas Health.
A seasoned legislator, James has held key positions, including Council Chairman, and has chaired major council committees such as Business Development & Zoning and Public Works. He's also contributed to the Arts & Culture, Housing, and Licensing code committees.
James champions transformative local initiatives including bringing health transportation through Uber Health and launching "Food Pharmacies" to ensure access to fresh food for residents in need. His leadership extends statewide—from serving on the NJ Legislative Black Caucus Foundation board to presiding over NJ Shares (2018–2024) and heading the NJ Democratic Municipal Officials as President (2020–2024).
Deeply rooted in East Orange, Councilman James continues leveraging his expertise in government policy, community organizing, and health equity to serve his ward with strength, strategy, and a visionary commitment to progress.
