Christopher Awe
East Orange Second Ward Council
Christopher D. Awe is a passionate lifelong community leader and advocate serving East Orange’s Second Ward since 2018. He was born and educated right here—graduating from East Orange Public Schools—and went on to earn a Bachelor’s in Business Administration with an accounting focus from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. His deep community ties are rooted in his upbringing and the values his Nigerian immigrant parents instilled in him.
Over a distinguished tenure on the City Council, Christopher has held key leadership roles: Council Chairman, Finance Committee Chair, Planning & Grants Committee Chair, and has served on numerous boards including Arts & Recreation, Business Development & Zoning, Housing, Licensing & Inspection, Law & Legislation, and Public Works. His strategic guidance has shaped city policy and programming to benefit all residents.
He is a dedicated educator, mentor, coach, tutor, advisor, and community organizer. His investment in youth development and civic engagement demonstrates his commitment to future generations. Christopher is also actively involved with civic organizations including Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO NY/NJ), the Urban League of Essex County Young Professionals, NAACP, and serves as Regional Director for the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO) for NY, NJ, and PA.
Professionally, he’s an entrepreneur and co-founder of Unlock Africa, LLC, a venture that empowers African small- and medium-sized businesses with the tools needed for sustainable, impactful growth.
He has also championed enriching community initiatives: as Chair of Planning & Grants, he rejuvenated public art with new murals across East Orange; as Finance Chair, he partnered with the Green Administration to elevate the city’s financial ratings and grow budget surpluses; and today, as Chair of Housing, Licensing, and Inspection, he advocates for safe, affordable housing—ensuring residents live in clean and secure homes.
Councilman Awe’s leadership reflects a cohesive blend of educational insight, civic dedication, and innovative stewardship—all grounded in faith, heritage, and a relentless drive to uplift East Orange.
