Abdur R. Yasin

Abdur R. Yasin, MPA is a Fire Captain in the Township of West Orange. Yasin is a former department Training Officer, a Pro Board-Certified Level 2 Fire Instructor, Pro Board-Certified Fire Officer 2, NJ Certified Incident Management Level 3, a NJ Certified Fire Official, and OEM Coordinator for the Township of West Orange. Yasin has received recognition throughout his fire service career including citations for life-saving efforts and emergency medical services.
Since becoming a Firefighter in 2002, Yasin has involved himself extensively in public sector labor relations by serving in several capacities, including executive, across all levels of government for the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association (NJFMBA), the largest firefighter union in New Jersey. Yasin is a Cohort Advisor for the State of NJ Certified Public Manager® Program (CPM) at the School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA) at Rutgers University–Newark. Yasin is also a part-time lecturer (Rutgers AAUP-AFT) and teaches courses in the graduate and undergraduate
programs at SPAA.
In addition, Yasin is a doctoral candidate at Rutgers SPAA, where he is studying human resource management as it relates to public personnel management, collective bargaining, civil service, politics, and state and local government management. Yasin has presented his research previously at conferences in Seattle, WA and Bologna, Italy and received invitations to present in Perth, Australia and Hollywood, CA. Yasin has also served on several panels during his professional career.
Presently, Yasin serves on several boards, including President-elect for the NJ chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (NJASPA) and first Vice-Chair for Partners for Health Foundation (PfH) as well as past service on state and local committees and commissions, including the New Jersey State Health Benefits Program Plan Design Committee, West Orange Economic Development Commission, Downtown West Orange Alliance, and West Orange Cannabis Taskforce and Advisory
Committee. Yasin earned a BA in History with honors from Rutgers-Newark in 2003. In 2014, he graduated from the Rutgers-Newark School of Public Affairs and Administration with a Master of Public Administration degree and was inducted into the Pi Alpha Alpha Honors Society for Public Administration. During his time in graduate school, Yasin was accepted into the Eagleton Institute of Politics and awarded Henry J. Raimondo Legislative Fellowship and a Graduate Research Fellow in Office of Legislative Services for the New Jersey Legislature.
Yasin is a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and serves on several committees in the Alpha Alpha Lambda chapter seated in Newark, NJ. Finally, Yasin is Chair of the West Orange Democratic County Committee and has held that position since 2018. As Chair, Yasin has shown his dedication to West Orange and Essex County, his vision for keeping Essex County strong, and his unwavering commitment to making a positive impact through championing initiatives that uplift the community. In fact, the Essex County Board of Commissioners honored Yasin for his outstanding career, impeccable character, and contributions to his community at its 2026 Muslim Heritage Month Celebration. Yasin resides with his wife, Begonia and family in West Orange.
